Up to the 1990s, Herrenwyk was a typical industrial area of Lübeck. The district was dominated by its blast furnace works and the Flender shipyards in the adjacent district of Siems. A former factory shop has provided the venue for a museum, Industriemuseum Geschichtswerkstatt, that sets out to look at the difficult working and living conditions of the local people, using the example of those employed in both of these industrial works. The fate of forced labourers and prisoners of War during the Second World War is also illustrated here.
